Individual-Verification

Digital IDs form a strong barrier against fraud and high assurance of a person’s identity. Users undergo a rigorous application process when they create the ID. Whenever users transact online with the digital ID, they perform an authentication step, such as entering a one-time pin code or scanning biometrics.

People who have digital IDs use them often. They’re portable and can be reused across a variety of services, such as banking, insurance, health care and government. When organizations provide Electronic Identification for verification, they position themselves to meet customer expectations for speed and convenience.

Data in digital IDs is encrypted and limited to only the required information for a particular online service. Users can see what data is shared and with whom, which gives them more control of their personally identifiable information and privacy.

National digital IDs issued by centralized governments, such as India’s Aadhaar, have gained widespread citizen adoption. The same is true for federated digital IDs issued by private-sector consortia, such as MitID in Denmark. Digital IDs have gained high population coverage in markets such as Singapore, Belgium, Norway, the Netherlands, India, Sweden, Brazil, Argentina and Finland.

Frequently Asked Questions

Learn more about key industry terms and concepts.

A digital ID is like an electronic version of a physical ID document, and a digital wallet is a collection of IDs or credentials on a mobile device.

The terms e-ID and digital ID are used to describe an electronic representation of personally identifiable information that may be used to verify an identity.

The steps in creating a digital ID account vary depending on the government or private entity that issues the ID. It may involve a background check, an in-person visit or uploading a government-issued ID document.

Some, but not all, digital IDs are also national IDs. National IDs are created by governments for citizens and residents. They are typically physical ID cards, such as passports and driver’s licenses. Sometimes, digital versions of these national IDs are issued, and these can be accessed online or via a mobile device like any other e-ID.

Data is secured with multifactor authentication and cryptographic protection. The user can see what a platform is requesting, such as name or address, and can restrict data sharing.

Often, businesses need permission to integrate directly with each ID issuer, typically using OpenID Connect. Businesses also can integrate with a single identity platform for fast, efficient integration and digital ID verification.

A centralized digital ID is created by a single entity, usually a government.

A federated digital ID is created by a collection of private and public entities, often banks, operating with trust frameworks.

Electronic Identification, Authentication and Trust Services is an EU proposal to introduce a digital wallet that gives users control over their personal information and how it’s shared. The proposal would increase digital ID adoption in the private sector and allow for cross-border digital ID recognition. The goal is for every member state to provide digital wallets.

An mDL is a mobile driver’s license. They are government-issued e-IDs stored on mobile phones. An mDL can include personally identifiable information such as name, age and license expiration date.
